Garmin GPS Map60Cx
When I first got my new Garmin GPS Map60cx my first impression was amazement at they managed to pack so many features into such a small device. My previous GPS was a Magellan Sportrak and before tha a Garmin eTrex. Admittedly it's been 4 years since my last upgrade but what a difference! The map 60 will actually give you a fix inside a building. I have mine loaded with all the NZ marine charts and city streets as well. The screen is too small for trip planning in my view so you still need to plan on a larger chart but once you planning is done the smaller GPS screen is fine.

Icom IC-M33 VHF
I paid $350 for my Icom VHF from Baywide Communications and I consider it money well spent. It'll standby for 9hrs easily, it's waterproof, floats and I can both recieve and transmit to Mayor Island from Papamoa with perfect clarity. I looked at a few other handhelds before choosing this one and in my view it out perfoms them all.
